# Why your lower back is stiff in the morning

Waking up stiff and loosening up as you move is one of the most common back complaints. Here is what tends to help, and the pattern that is worth getting checked.

Key takeaways

- Morning stiffness that eases within a short time of getting up is very common.
- Gentle movement first thing helps more than forcing a deep stretch cold.
- Stiffness that lasts a long time, improves with exercise but not rest, and wakes you at night is worth raising with a doctor.

## Why do mornings feel worst?

You spend hours lying fairly still. The muscles and joints around your spine have barely moved, so the first bend of the day, putting on socks or leaning over the sink, is the one you notice. For most people, that stiffness eases once they have been up and moving for a while.

Your mattress and sleeping position can play a part, but there is rarely one perfect setup. A back that is stiff every morning is usually telling you more about how much it moves and how strong it is across the whole week than about one night’s sleep.

## What usually helps in the morning

- **Get up in stages.** Roll onto your side, push up with your arms, and sit on the edge of the bed for a moment before standing.

- **Move gently before you move hard.** A few minutes of easy movement, like walking around the house, [cat-cow stretch](https://remedyrecoveries.com/exercises/cat-cow) on hands and knees, or knees rocking side to side while lying on your back, warms things up better than forcing a deep stretch cold.

- **Save heavy lifting and long sitting for later.** If you can, do your hardest physical tasks after you have been up for an hour, not straight out of bed.

None of this is a fix on its own. It just makes mornings easier while you work on the part that matters more.

## What matters more: the rest of the week

Clinical guidelines for low back pain, such as the UK’s NICE guideline [1] and the American College of Physicians guideline [2], both put exercise and staying active near the top of the list. In practice that means regular mobility work, core stability, and strength in your hips and back, built up gradually over weeks.

If you have no equipment at home, that is fine: [a floor-only back routine](https://remedyrecoveries.com/guides/back-exercises-no-equipment) covers all three. And if you sit for most of the day, the hours in the chair are often what makes the next morning feel worse; the [guide for people who sit all day](https://remedyrecoveries.com/desk) covers that side of it.

## Morning stiffness that needs a doctor

Stiffness that loosens within a short time of getting up is very common. A different pattern is worth raising with a doctor: stiffness that lasts a long time most mornings, gets *better* with exercise but not with rest, or wakes you in the second half of the night, especially if it started gradually before your mid-forties. That can point to an inflammatory condition, which needs proper assessment rather than a stretching routine [3].

## How Remedy fits

Remedy’s onboarding asks what makes your back worse, and “mornings or after rest” is one of the options. Choosing it makes mobility exercises aimed at morning stiffness, like cat-cow and the [open-book rotation](https://remedyrecoveries.com/exercises/open-book-rotation), more likely to show up in your sessions. Mobility sits in the warm-up and cooldown of every session, and the program builds strength and stability over several weeks. [See how the program is put together](https://remedyrecoveries.com/how).

## Questions

### Why is my lower back stiff when I wake up?

You have spent hours lying fairly still, so the muscles and joints around your spine have barely moved. For most people that stiffness eases once they have been up and moving for a while.

### Is my mattress causing my back pain?

It can play a part, but there is rarely one perfect setup. A back that is stiff every morning usually says more about how much it moves and how strong it is across the week than about one night’s sleep.

### When is morning back stiffness a concern?

If it lasts a long time most mornings, gets better with exercise but not with rest, or wakes you in the second half of the night, especially if it started before your mid-forties, raise it with a doctor.

## When to see someone instead of using an app

Get medical care, not an exercise routine, if you have back pain with any of these:

- Numbness or tingling around your genitals or buttocks
- Trouble peeing, or loss of bladder or bowel control
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs that is getting worse
- Back pain after a fall, car accident, or other injury
- A fever, or feeling unwell, along with back pain
- Unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer
- Pain that is severe, constant, and gets worse at night or when lying down
- Pain that keeps getting worse over several weeks instead of better
